Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Pretender

Vincent’s jaw tightened until the muscles along his temples bulged like corded rope. His hands, resting at his sides, clenched into massive, scarred fists, the black ink across his knuckles stretching taut against his skin. In the entire history of his syndicate, in every boardroom, warehouse, and private club from Detroit to Miami, no human being had ever looked him in the face and said the word no.
To have that word delivered by his own wife, in front of the entire criminal and political aristocracy of Illinois, was a public strike against his crown.
"Claire," Vincent growled, taking a full, threatening step forward, his immense chest nearly brushing her shoulder. "You will go to our suite upstairs right now, or I swear to God—"
Before the threat could leave his lips, Vanessa moved.
Sensing that the atmosphere had shifted, that Claire’s terrifying calm was somehow commanding more power in the room than her own manufactured tears, Vanessa executed her masterstroke.
With a soft, dramatic gasp of air, Vanessa’s knees visibly buckled. Her body tilted sideways, her blonde head falling back as though she were losing consciousness, her silver silk gown rippling like water as she collapsed directly against Vincent’s broad chest.
"Vincent..." Vanessa gasped, her voice frail, her eyelids fluttering in agonizing theater as her manicured hand caught the lapel of his tuxedo. "I... I can't breathe. My head... I feel dizzy."
It was a performance of pure, shameless melodrama, but it was designed to force Vincent’s hand—to make him choose, publicly and irrevocably, between his defiant wife and the fragile woman in his arms.
Vincent did not hesitate for even a fraction of a second.
His instincts took over. With a swift, powerful movement, he caught Vanessa around the waist before her feet could touch the shattered glass. He scooped his other arm beneath her knees, lifting the blonde woman effortlessly into his arms as though she weighed nothing at all. Vanessa let out a delicate sigh, burying her face into the crook of his tattooed neck, her silver silk pooling over his black trousers.
"Clear the floor!" Vincent roared at the crowd, his voice booming across the ballroom like thunder.
The guests scrambled out of his path, pressing themselves against the marble pillars and draped tables. Vincent turned his back on Claire without a single backward glance, his jaw set in fierce, protective fury as he carried Vanessa toward the grand staircase that led to the private executive suites on the second floor.
The ballroom watched in stunned, breathless silence as the Don carried another woman away in his arms, leaving his lawful wife standing alone in the center of the wreckage, her hem stained with wine and her feet surrounded by shards of broken crystal.
A whisper of pity rippled through the older women in the gallery. A young associate looked down at his shoes, unable to stomach the sheer cruelty of the spectacle.
Claire stood completely still, watching the broad, retreating back of her husband as he ascended the marble steps, carrying his past toward a gilded bedroom.
She did not cry. Not a single tear formed in the corners of her brown eyes.
Slowly, deliberately, Claire drew a long, deep breath into her lungs. She rolled her shoulders back, feeling the tension that had gripped her spine for five years release its hold. She smoothed the front of her emerald-green gown with both hands, ignoring the pain in her bruised ribs. She lifted her chin, meeting the gaze of every staring guest with unblinking, aristocratic dignity.

She did not look like a humiliated wife left in the ruins of a scandal.
She looked like an empress who had just signed an eviction notice on an entire empire.
