Chapter 2 - The Mask of the Serpent

The ballroom seemed to hold its breath. The sharp scent of spilled vintage wine and crushed citrus rose from the soaked runner at Claire’s feet, mingling with the metallic tang of adrenaline. Waiters in white waistcoats froze in their tracks, silver trays suspended in mid-air, while several city councilmen and their wives turned their faces away, eager to avoid being caught as witnesses to a confrontation inside the Moretti inner circle.
Claire steadied her weight against the edge of the limestone wainscoting. Her chest rose and fell in sharp, measured rhythms, her fingers pressing into the fabric of her dress over her throbbing ribs. The decorative belt had pinched her skin through the silk, leaving an angry, burning welt beneath the emerald fabric. For a second, a familiar wave of humiliation threatened to drag tears to her eyes—the instinctive reaction of a woman who had tried for five years to maintain dignity in a world governed by terror and vanity.
Then, something inside her broke clean and cold.
It wasn't a fracture of despair; it was the sudden, crystalline snap of total detachment. The five years of walking on eggshells, the endless nights waiting in an empty penthouse while Vincent settled "family matters," the quiet insults swallowed at dinner parties to protect his social standing—all of it dissolved, replaced by a deep, quiet stillness.
Claire pushed herself off the wall. She did not look at the shattered crystal at her feet, nor at the stains on her hem. She straightened her posture until her spine was an unbroken rod of steel.
She stepped directly toward Vanessa, closing the distance between them until they were barely an arm’s length apart. Her delicate facial features were cast in absolute marble, her brown eyes burning with a dark, unyielding intensity that caused the blonde woman’s laughter to stutter and die in her throat.
"Don't touch me again," Claire said.
The words were not shouted. They were spoken in a low, resonant cadence that cut straight through the high ceiling of the room, carrying the terrifying weight of an absolute boundary.
Vanessa’s playful expression vanished. The artificial sweetness that she wore for public consumption peeled away, exposing the feral, spiteful predator beneath. Her lips parted, her teeth bared slightly as she leaned into Claire’s space, her voice dropping into a vicious hiss.
"You think wearing his ring makes you untouchable, Bennett?" Vanessa whispered, her eyes flashing with pure malice. "Vincent has been bored of you for two years. He keeps you around like a decorative vase in the foyer. The moment I ask him to put you out on the street, you'll be nothing but a footnote in this family."
Vanessa took another aggressive half-step forward, raising her hand as if to jab a pointed finger into Claire’s shoulder.
Then, Vanessa’s eyes flicked past Claire's ear, looking toward the grand marble staircase that descended from the VIP mezzanine.
Her posture transformed in an instant.
The vicious sneer vanished, replaced by a look of wide-eyed, trembling vulnerability. The cruel tightness around her jaw slackened, her lower lip beginning to quiver with theatrical perfection. Her shoulders caved inward, her hand retreating to clutch her own chest, as though she were an innocent schoolgirl who had just been cornered by a vicious bully.
A heavy, measured tread sounded on the parquet floor behind Claire.

The crowd parted instantly, murmurs dropping into an absolute, deferential silence. The air grew suddenly cold with the suffocating gravity that only followed one man in this city.
Vincent Moretti had arrived.
