Chapter 6 - THE SILENT DINING ROOM

The atmosphere inside Il Destino had transformed entirely. The luxury, opulent dining room felt no longer like a high-end steakhouse, but like a pressure cooker on the verge of explosive detonation.
The restaurant manager, standing twenty feet away behind a mahogany pillar, frantically waved his hands to signal the rest of the floor staff to clear out the remaining guests. Waiters quietly moved from table to table, whispering urgent apologies to the wealthy patrons, guiding them toward the side exits. Within three minutes, the main floor of Il Destino was entirely emptied of civilian diners, leaving only the staff huddled near the kitchen doors and Rico’s five armed bodyguards positioned around the perimeter.
Rico did not care about the empty tables. He did not care about the lost business or the public spectacle. His entire universe had contracted down to the four square feet of space around his private table.
He stared into Clara Vance's brown eyes, searching her tired face for any sign of deception, any sign that this was a coordinated setup or a cheap tactical play by a rival crime family.
"He whispered it twice," Clara said softly, her voice steady despite the intense danger surrounding her. "The first time to me. The second time to you."
Rico swallowed hard, a dry, painful click in his throat. "That name... that name died six months ago. In the car that burned on the highway."
Clara’s eyes widened slightly as the final piece of the dark puzzle fell into place in her mind. She looked down at five-year-old Leo, who was quietly drinking the last drops of his warm milk, looking completely peaceful and content in her presence.
"He was in the car, wasn't he?" Clara asked quietly.
Rico’s breath hitched. He nodded slowly, a single, agonizing motion of his head. "He was in the back seat. The police said... the investigators said she died instantly from the impact before the fire started. They said Leo survived because the rear child seat held."
"The investigators lied to you, Mr. Moretti," Clara stated, her voice chillingly calm.
Dante stepped forward again, his brow furrowed in anger. "Boss, this is crazy. She's just a waitress! She doesn't know anything about the accident! She's messing with your head!"
"Shut up, Dante!" Rico snapped without looking away from Clara. "Let her speak."

Clara leaned in slightly, lowering her voice so that only Rico could hear her over the quiet trickle of the fountain behind them.
"Your son hasn't been silent for six months because he was traumatized by the crash," Clara whispered, her words cutting through Rico's chest like a serrated blade. "He’s been silent because he was terrified to speak the name of the person who put his mother in that car."
