Chapter 3 - THE TOUCH AND THE WHISPER

The silence in the grand dining room was so profound that the gentle hum of the fountain near the wall sounded like a rushing river.

Rico Moretti slowly leaned forward in his chair. His dark eyes were wide, filled with a complex, stunning mixture of disbelief, shock, and profound emotional destabilization. For six agonizing months, since the dark night his wife was buried, Rico had hired top pediatricians, child psychologists, and private specialists from across the country to help his son. None of them had been able to reach the child during a panic attack. None of them had been able to stop the screaming.

And yet, here was an exhausted twenty-four-year-old waitress in a worn black-and-white uniform, kneeling on the floor beside spilled risotto, bringing peace to his broken boy with nothing more than a warm glass of milk and a simple breathing pattern.

Clara reached out slowly, taking the warm tumbler of milk from the table. She didn't push it into his hands; she held it gently in front of him, keeping her eyes locked onto his.

"One sip," Clara whispered softly, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "Just one tiny sip."

Leo reached out his small, trembling hands. His fingers wrapped around the glass tumbler, feeling the gentle warmth radiating through the glass. He brought it to his lips, taking a slow, tiny sip of the sweet, warm milk.

He swallowed. The warm liquid seemed to settle his stomach instantly.

He took another sip, longer this time, his small shoulders finally dropping their extreme tension as he leaned back against the plush velvet chair.

Rico slowly rose from his seat. He stood towering above Clara, but his cold, intimidating posture was gone, replaced by a raw, unshielded vulnerability that Dante had never seen in his boss in twenty years of service. Rico stared down at his son, his chest heaving under his tailored black suit, his fingers twitching against his pants leg.

"Leo..." Rico breathed softly, his voice trembling slightly.

Leo didn't look at his father. His focus remained entirely on Clara.

The five-year-old boy slowly lowered the glass tumbler, resting it back on the table. Then, with a slow, deliberate movement, Leo reached out his small right hand. His tiny fingers wrapped tightly around Clara’s index finger, holding onto her hand as if she were an anchor in a storm.

Clara felt the small, warm pressure of his grip. She looked up at him, her smile broadening, her eyes warm and gentle. "There you go. You're safe."

Then, Leo leaned his small body forward off the velvet chair.

He pulled himself closer to Clara’s ear, his light brown hair brushing against her cheek.

Rico, Dante, and every security guard surrounding the table leaned in by a fraction of an inch, watching the boy's lips move.

Leo opened his mouth and whispered one single name directly into Clara’s ear.

May you like

The name was not spoken aloud. The audience did not hear it. It was a faint, breathy whisper meant only for the young waitress kneeling beside his chair.

The moment the name hit Clara’s eardrum, her warm, compassionate smile vanished instantly.
