Chapter 9 - The Perimeter Weakens

The silence of the evening was abruptly broken by a faint, rhythmic vibration against Luca’s chest.

Luca pulled a encrypted satellite phone from his inner coat pocket. He glanced at the glowing screen, his face hardening instantly.

“It’s the south gate,” Luca said, pressing the phone to his ear. “Talk to me.”

He listened for three seconds. His posture shifted, blading toward the garden entrance, his right hand immediately resting on the grip of his holstered sidearm.

“How many?” Luca demanded into the receiver.

Another beat of silence.

Luca lowered the phone, his eyes meeting Damian’s in the gloom.

“A convoy just pulled up to the outer gate,” Luca said, his voice flat and tactical. “Three black SUVs. Heavily tinted glass. No plates. The lead vehicle is broadcasting an executive bypass code on our secure frequency.”

“Julian’s frequency,” Damian said, not a flicker of surprise in his voice.

“They aren't waiting for gate clearance,” Luca continued, his jaw tight. “They’re presenting family credentials to the outer perimeter guards. The guards at the road are confused, Boss. They don't know whether to shoot or stand down. Julian’s name is still listed as a primary authority on the estate charter.”

Damian didn’t flinch. He didn’t stand up. He remained seated on the bench, holding Mia against his chest with his left arm, his right hand sliding smoothly into his jacket to retrieve the Kimber 1911.

With a soft, oiled metallic click, Damian racked the slide, chambering a .45 hollow-point round. The sound was quiet, swallowed by the fountain, but it resonated with absolute, terminal finality.

“Tell the gate guards to let them through,” Damian commanded.

Luca stared at him. “Boss? If we let three SUVs into the inner courtyard, we’re inviting an assault team directly to our front door.”

“They aren't an assault team,” Damian said coldly. “Not yet. Julian thinks he’s coming to collect an inheritance. He tracked the girl here. He thinks she’s hiding in the woods, or that she died in the drain. He has no idea she reached me. He thinks he can walk into this house, use his authority, and take control before I realize what’s happening.”

“And when he sees her?” Luca asked.

Damian looked down at Mia. The little girl had finally shifted, her eyes fluttering open in the dim twilight. She blinked against the shadows, looking up at Damian’s chiseled, shadowed face with wide, sleep-filled eyes.

She didn't cry. She reached up a small, dusty hand and touched the stubble on his jaw, her tiny fingers tracing the scar near his lip.

“You’re still here,” she whispered softly.

A ghost of a smile touched Damian Romano’s lips—the first genuine smile to cross his face in ten long years.

“I’m not going anywhere, Mia,” he whispered back.

He reached into his pocket, slipped the silver pocket watch into the small pocket of her faded blue dress, and patted the torn stuffed rabbit back under her arm.

“Luca,” Damian said, rising smoothly from the teak bench, hoisting Mia effortlessly into his left arm. The child rested naturally on his hip, wrapping her small arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

In his right hand, held down against the seam of his beige trousers, the heavy steel of the 1911 was completely hidden from view.

“Call the house detail,” Damian ordered, his voice dropping into the terrifying register of an emperor preparing for war. “Tell them the prodigal son has come home.”
