Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Blood

Luca stood frozen on the flagstones. The garden breeze seemed to drop ten degrees in an instant.

Julian Romano was Damian’s older brother by two years. Where Damian had been the quiet, calculating enforcer of the family, Julian had been the charismatic prince, the heir apparent groomed by Vincenzo to take over the syndicate's legitimate business interests. When the car had been found abandoned by the river ten years ago, the police had recovered blood belonging to both Vincenzo and Julian. The syndicate had assumed both men were ambushed, murdered, and dumped in the bay by rival factions looking to decapitate the Romano family.

That assumption had shaped the last decade of Damian’s life. Driven by grief and vengeance, Damian had taken the throne, wiped out the Marcone family, consolidated power across the entire tri-state area, and turned the Romano syndicate into an impenetrable empire.

And now, the truth was unraveling like cheap cotton.

“Julian is alive?” Luca asked, his voice shaking. “Where has he been for ten years?”

“Running the offshore shell corporations in the Caymans,” Damian said, his eyes dark with murderous clarity. “The ones my father supposedly set up before he disappeared. Julian didn't kill Vincenzo to destroy the family. He kidnapped him to take the private keys to the trust funds. But he couldn't access the accounts without Vincenzo’s biometric codes, which were locked to this watch’s internal mechanism.”

Luca looked at the silver timepiece in Damian’s hand. “The watch has a mechanism?”

“A micro-transponder hidden behind the movement,” Damian said, his thumb running over the dented rim. “My father had it built by a Swiss horologist in the nineties. It’s a physical cold-storage key. Without it, the hundred and eighty million dollars sitting in the Zurich accounts can’t be moved.”

Luca looked at the sleeping child on Damian’s lap, the pieces fitting together in a horrific, bloody mosaic.

“Then why send the watch here?” Luca asked. “If Julian had your father, and he needed the watch, why give it to a child and send her to you?”

Damian’s jaw tightened until the bone threatened to crack.

“Because Julian didn't send her,” Damian said softly. “She isn’t Julian’s child.”

He looked down at Mia. In the fading light, her features seemed to shift, the resemblance that Damian had missed in his initial shock suddenly glaringly obvious. The wide, stubborn forehead. The faint cleft in the chin. The dark, unruly curls that refused to lie flat.

“She’s my father’s daughter,” Damian said.

Luca choked on his breath. “What?”

“The engraving,” Damian whispered, his eyes burning into the darkness. ‘She is your sister, Damian. Keep her safe from Julian. He’s coming for the vault.’

Vincenzo hadn’t been killed ten years ago. Julian had kept their father alive in captivity, torturing him for the codes, keeping him in an isolated compound. And somehow, in that hell, Vincenzo had managed to father another child—or protect one born in captivity—and waited for the one moment he could strike back.

Vincenzo had given his life to get this girl to the storm drain. He had sacrificed himself so that Mia could deliver the key to the only man capable of protecting her: his most lethal son.

Mia stirred again, letting out a soft sigh. Her little face buried itself deeper into Damian’s tailored jacket, her tiny hand gripping his lapel with the instinctual, unshakable trust of a child who knew she was finally safe.

Damian looked at her, his heart aching with a profound, terrifying surge of love and fury.

She wasn’t an intruder. She wasn’t a liability.

She was his sister. The last living piece of his father’s blood.
