Chapter 5 - The Bell

The doorbell rang thirty minutes after Victoria toasted my injury. Ethan’s head snapped toward the foyer.
“Who invited someone?”
“I did,” I said.
For the first time since Tuesday, fear was no longer controlling my breath. It had moved somewhere else, across the table, into Ethan’s jaw, Victoria’s eyes, Natalie’s fingers tightening around her wineglass.
Ethan stood. “Rachel, what did you do?”
I looked at my phone. “I listened.”
His face hardened. He started around the table toward me, but the bell rang again before he reached my chair. That second chime sounded almost polite. Like consequence waiting with manners.

Ethan went to the door because men like him still believe they control the threshold.
He opened it.
Two police officers stood outside with my attorney behind them.
I could not see the whole exchange from the table, but I heard Ethan’s voice rise. “This is a private residence.”
One officer replied, “We need to speak with Rachel Bennett.”
Ethan tried to block the doorway. That was his second mistake of the evening.
The officers entered.
By the time Ethan stormed back into the dining room, his face was red and his hands were clenched. “You called the police on your own husband?”
I did not move.
“No,” I said. “I called them on the man who broke my arm.”
Victoria gasped as though the crime had been naming it.
Then Ethan lunged one step toward me, and the officers moved.

That was the moment the dinner ended.
And the record began.
