Chapter 1 - The Doorbell

The dining room doors burst open just as Ethan lifted his wineglass to toast the lesson he thought he had taught me. Two police officers came in fast, their shoes striking the polished floor, their hands already moving toward him before anyone at the table understood what was happening. Ethan shot up from his chair, knocking one leg backward so hard the glassware rattled.

“Get your hands off me!” he shouted.

They took both his arms from behind.

I remained seated at the head of the table with my right arm trapped in a white sling and my left hand resting beside my phone. My face still carried the bruise he had left near my cheekbone. My fingers were swollen under the bandages. I could not cut the roast beef his mother had served, so my plate sat untouched beneath the chandelier.

Victoria Bennett stood beside the table, pale dress glittering under the warm light, one hand flying to her chest. “This is a family matter!”

I turned my bruised face toward her slowly.

“You made it evidence.”

Natalie, Ethan’s sister, had been laughing ten minutes earlier. Now she stared at my phone like it was a loaded weapon. The screen was blurred, black from where she sat, but the recording had been running since Victoria raised her wineglass and said my husband had “taught me a lesson.”

One officer looked at Ethan. “Step away from your wife.”

Ethan froze.

For the first time all week, his anger turned into fear.

I lifted my eyes to him and spoke quietly.

“You should have checked whose name is on the house.”

The entire dining room went silent.
