Chapter 6 - Everett’s Voice

I did not intend to speak.

That had been the plan. Mark would read the necessary statement. The guests would hear Everett’s final instructions. My family would learn in public what they had chosen in private.

But when I saw Everett’s portrait beside the lilies, I changed my mind.

I took the microphone.

“My husband believed people revealed themselves most clearly in moments when there was nothing to gain,” I said.

The hall went still.

My mother’s posture stiffened.

“On the day of his funeral, most of the people in this room came to say goodbye. Some drove hours. Some barely knew him but remembered his kindness. Two of his coworkers stood in the rain with me after everyone else left.”

I looked at them. Both men lowered their eyes.

“My family did not come.”

A soft murmur moved through the room.

Penelope’s face flushed.

“They chose a birthday party instead.”

My mother whispered, “Selena.”

I continued.

“And before I left the cemetery, my mother called to ask whether Everett’s promised money for that party would still be transferred.”

Now the room changed completely.

People looked at Jasmine.

Then at Penelope.

My mother covered her mouth as if she had been wounded by my honesty.

Mark opened the white box and removed the sealed envelope.

“Everett left final instructions regarding certain gifts,” he said.

His voice shook once, then steadied.

I placed the envelope into his hands in front of everyone.

My mother stood halfway.

“What is that?”

May you like

I met her eyes.

“Everett’s final instruction.”
