Chapter 1 - The White Envelope

Selena Hayes placed the sealed white envelope into Mark Reynolds’s trembling hands, and my mother gasped from the front row as if grief had finally found her.

The memorial hall was filled with white lilies, flickering candles, and quiet people dressed in black. Sunlight poured through tall arched windows and fell across Everett’s framed portrait beside the stage. He was smiling in the picture, the way he used to smile when he caught me worrying and wanted to make the world feel less cruel for a minute.

My sister Penelope leaned forward in her burgundy dress. Panic flashed across her face.

“What is that?” my mother asked, rising halfway from her chair.

I looked at her calmly.

“Everett’s final instruction.”

Penelope whispered, “This is supposed to be private.”

That almost made me laugh.

Private.

They had made my husband’s funeral private when they chose a birthday party instead.

I turned toward the guests, my hands steady around the microphone even though my heart felt like it had been scraped hollow.

“You made his funeral private when you chose a party instead.”

The room froze.

Guests looked from my mother to Penelope. Mark opened the envelope just enough to reveal sealed legal papers, their text safely hidden from the room.

My mother covered her mouth.

Penelope’s face went pale.

I looked directly at the family that had left me alone beside a grave and then called to ask for money.

“Everett left nothing for the people who couldn’t even say goodbye.”

The memorial hall fell into stunned silence.

And for the first time since the cemetery, I could breathe.
