Chapter 3 - Marrying Up

Preston spent the first year of our relationship acting embarrassed by his family’s wealth.

He told me he wanted a life based on work, not inheritance.

I believed him.

He admired that I drove an older car.

Said my simple clothes made me authentic.

He loved eating at Elena’s kitchen table and asked for seconds of every meal she cooked.

But once we became engaged, his language changed.

He began talking about presentation.

My dress needed to be more appropriate for the Vale name.

The guest list needed to include people who could help his father’s business.

My mother should avoid discussing the tailoring shop because some guests might misunderstand.

I should allow Caroline to approve the flowers, invitations, seating arrangement, and menu.

Each demand arrived wrapped in concern.

Preston was not ashamed of wealth.

He was ashamed that I did not appear sufficiently grateful for access to it.

When the wedding deposit was due, I paid half from a trust Elena created for me years earlier.

Preston told his parents the money came from him.

I discovered the lie when Caroline praised her son for covering everything.

Preston squeezed my hand beneath the table.

“Why correct her? It makes her happy.”

I told myself it was harmless.

Love can turn cowardice into diplomacy if you rename it often enough.

The night before the wedding, Elena asked whether I was sure.

“About Preston?”

“About becoming smaller so he can feel larger.”

I did not answer.

The next evening, he laughed while his mother humiliated her.

That became my answer.
