Chapter 1 - This Wedding Is Over

The first laugh came before Caroline Vale finished insulting my mother.
Five hundred guests sat beneath crystal chandeliers while she lifted her champagne flute toward the head table.
“To family,” she said. “And to miracles. Who would have imagined a woman from a trailer park could raise a daughter polished enough to marry a Vale?”
The ballroom erupted.
My mother, Elena Bennett, sat beside me in the silver-beaded dress she had altered herself. Her fingers tightened around her napkin, but she kept her chin high.
Caroline smiled wider.
“Of course, we had to teach Sophie which fork to use.”
More laughter.
Then Preston leaned toward his brother.
“At least she stopped asking whether caviar was jam.”
The man I was supposed to marry laughed with them.
I turned toward him.
“You promised they would stop.”
He gave me the patient smile he used whenever he wanted to make my anger look childish.
“Relax. It’s a toast.”
My father-in-law, Richard, stood next.
“Elena, don’t worry. We won’t ask you to reimburse us for the wedding. We know your little alterations business probably couldn’t cover the flowers.”
My mother’s eyes filled.
Something inside me became perfectly still.
I rose and took the microphone.
The band stopped playing.
“You mocked my mother to entertain your guests.”
Preston’s smile disappeared.
I placed one arm around Elena.
“So let’s talk about what your family really owns.”
The room tightened.
“My mother’s company owns three of your boutiques.”
Caroline’s champagne glass trembled.
“And your fortune collapses in forty-eight hours.”
I removed the ring from my finger and placed it on the edge of the wedding cake.

“This wedding is over.”
Then I took my mother’s hand and walked away before anyone in the Vale family remembered how to breathe.
