Chapter 5 - The Marine With the Expensive Rifle

Cole did not back down immediately.

Men like him rarely did. They mistook correction for humiliation because humiliation was what they usually offered other people.

“If she’s that important,” he said, “why haven’t any of us heard of her?”

Sterling’s expression cooled.

“Because classified service does not exist for your entertainment.”

A few shooters looked away.

Cole’s face reddened.

“I’m just saying one hit doesn’t make a legend.”

Claire finally turned toward him.

“I never said it did.”

Her voice was calm, but the tiredness inside it had edges.

Cole gestured toward her rifle.

“Then shoot the next plate.”

The range officer hesitated.

Sterling looked at Claire, not ordering, only asking with his eyes.

Claire considered refusing.

She had not come to perform old wounds for men who needed proof. But she had spent too many years watching arrogance dress itself as expertise. Cole’s mockery was not only aimed at her. It was aimed at every quiet person on that range who had ever been dismissed before touching the table.

She stepped back behind the rifle.

The second target sat farther left, smaller, moving slightly on a suspended frame in shifting wind.

Claire adjusted by feel.

Cole watched through his scope.

She fired.

Steel answered.

No one spoke.

The third shot hit a narrow edge plate most competitors had skipped during practice.

The fourth corrected for a sudden wind drop so cleanly that the spotter whispered, “She held before the flag changed.”

The fifth rang out against the farthest plate on the course.

Five shots.

Five hits.

Claire stood and made the rifle safe again.

Her face remained unreadable, but her breathing had changed. Sterling noticed. So did two older instructors who had seen enough combat to understand when memory entered the body without permission.

Cole lowered his scope.

The arrogance had not vanished completely.

But it had nowhere to stand.

Then a man from the back of the crowd stepped forward with tears in his eyes.

He wore a SEAL Foundation cap and carried himself like an old injury had never fully left.

“Ma’am,” he said, voice breaking, “were you Korengal overwatch?”

The range went still.

Claire closed her eyes for half a second.

May you like

Sterling answered for her.

“She is the reason twelve SEALs made it home alive.”
