Chapter 5 - THE DECLARATION OF IRON

Elena Ward did not honor Rourke with an answer.

With smooth, unhurried care, she lifted the heavy, ruined optic off the rifle’s mounting rail. The cracked glass reflected the harsh fluorescent lights one last time as she turned the assembly over in her hands.

She leaned forward across the wide melamine table.

Gently, without slamming it or making a dramatic show, she placed the broken optic flat on the table, setting it down directly in front of Caleb Rourke’s crossed arms. The brass thumb-nuts sat neatly beside the mount.

Then, Elena looked down at the top of the exposed receiver.

With the scope removed, the rifle’s original, factory-installed iron sights were fully visible: a rugged, hooded front blade pinned securely to the muzzle brake, and an adjustable, dual-aperture peep sight mounted to the rear of the receiver bridge, complete with its coarse windage knob and elevation drum.

Elena reached out her left thumb and flicked the rear elevation dial.

CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.

The antique spring-loaded detents snapped with clean, crisp, mechanical perfection. The previous armorers had neglected the glass, but the internal iron-sight mechanism—protected inside its steel protective ears—was pristine, oiled, and functional.

Elena picked up the rifle once more, settling the scarred wooden stock across her forearms.

She lifted her chin and looked directly into Caleb Rourke’s eyes.

Her gaze was cold, empty of fear, and utterly devoid of malice. It was the calm, detached stare of a professional who possessed knowledge far beyond the comprehension of the man standing before her.

"Iron sights will be enough," Elena said.

Her voice was not loud, but it cut through the hum of the lighting with terrifying, unshakeable authority.

No one laughed.

Sergeant Dylan Hayes closed his mouth, his arms uncrossing as he stood straight against the lockers, his face flushing with a sudden, uncomfortable realization. The other operators along the wall avoided her eyes, shifting their weight uncomfortably on the concrete. The joke had completely evaporated, inverted into an embarrassing display of their own ignorance by a woman who had just stripped a broken weapon down to its bare fundamentals without a single complaint.
