Chapter 39 - THE GHOST TRANSMISSION

"Uplink established!" Dr. Aris's voice screamed over the local squad comms. "Captain! The cable is live! I’m transmitting the unredacted files directly to JSOC Command, the Naval Inspector General, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs!"
On the small digital display inside the bunker, the progress bar shot forward: *40%... 65%... 85%...*
Above the fortress, the sky was tearing open. The first golden rays of dawn sliced through the retreating squall, illuminating the devastation wrought upon the ancient citadel. But with the light came a new sound—the high-pitched, dual-rotor whine of an inbound AH-64 Apache gunship, painted in unmarked black, descending rapidly toward the harbor mouth.
"Transmission at 98%!" Aris screamed.
Over Elena’s tactical headset, the voice of General Halloway himself broke through the emergency override frequency, stripped of his previous composed arrogance, now shrill with pure desperation.
"Elena Vance! Cease the transmission immediately! You have no idea what you are unmaking! The Apex contracts are the backbone of three separate theater operations! You expose this, and you pull the pin on the entire alliance!"
Elena stood tall on the swaying crane, the wind howling around her, the rising sea water foaming thirty feet below. She keyed her mic.
"My grandfather fought on Hill 881 with empty canteens and a broken scope, General," Elena said, her voice dropping into a deadly, ice-cold cadence. "He held the line because he believed in an oath. You traded that oath for offshore accounts and private jets. The Vance family doesn't negotiate with merchants of treason."
"Transmission complete!" Aris shouted. "The packet has cleared! The entire Pentagon network just received the unredacted ledgers!"

On the radio, Halloway gasped—a choked, terrified sound.
Suddenly, the black Apache crested the outer seawall, its nose turning down toward the gantry crane, the 30mm chain gun beneath its cockpit tracking straight toward Elena’s chest.
