Chapter 7 - Why She Was Invited

Avery remained at Coronado for twelve weeks.

Her system became a pilot course for operators working in ship corridors, vehicle interiors, narrow compounds, and aircraft cabins.

The first class included Ethan.

Brody was not permitted to return until the review process ended.

Avery never used the takedown incident to humiliate Ethan.

On the first day, she placed him beside the smallest operator in the class.

“Your job is not to defeat your partner,” she said.

“It is to give them enough pressure to learn without removing their ability to learn.”

Ethan understood the sentence was meant for him.

Weeks later, he performed the same entry Avery had used between him and Brody. His timing was poor at first. He relied too heavily on his shoulders.

Avery corrected his foot position.

He looked at her.

“Why are you helping me?”

“Because the course is not about what happened to me.”

“What is it about?”

“The person who might need this in a place where strength isn’t enough.”

At the final demonstration, operators moved through a mock ship interior with narrow steel corridors and unstable flooring. Smaller team members navigated positions that once trapped them behind larger teammates.

The course was approved for broader testing.

Reardon handed Avery the black notebook before she left.

She opened to the page written after the fight.

Beneath the two original sentences, he had added a third.

The room believed she came to prove she belonged.

She came to teach us where we were wrong.

Avery closed the notebook.

Three hundred SEALs remembered the eleven seconds when two powerful men ended up on the mat.

But the fight was never the reason she had been invited.

She was there because years earlier, a team entered a space using techniques built for a room they did not have.

Avery survived.

Then she spent four years making sure the next team would not need luck to do the same.
