Chapter 6 - The Cost of Arrogance

Brody demanded a formal review.

He claimed Avery used unfamiliar techniques that made the exercise unsafe.

The recording showed otherwise.

The double kick occurred before the official restart signal.

Audio captured Brody telling Ethan to hit her together.

Both men had discussed teaching the lieutenant a lesson in the locker room earlier that day.

Ethan admitted it first.

He had expected Avery to withdraw after being knocked down. When she stood, he followed Brody’s second charge because refusing in front of the crowd felt humiliating.

That explanation did not excuse him.

But it revealed the exact problem Avery’s program was meant to address.

Operators were trained to commit decisively.

They also needed the discipline to recognize when commitment had become ego.

Brody was removed from instructor duties pending review.

Ethan remained in the program under formal corrective action and later agreed to participate in retraining.

Some SEALs objected.

They believed consequences would make training softer.

Avery answered during the review board.

“Standards are not soft.”

She looked toward the paused footage of the double kick.

“Breaking them because a smaller officer embarrassed you is.”

The room had no response.

Avery did not ask for either man’s career to be destroyed.

She asked for the same thing she expected from every trainee.
