Chapter 5 - The Emergency Petition
The following morning, Evelyn filed an emergency petition requesting temporary guardianship of Lily.
She claimed I traveled constantly, left my daughter without stable care, and returned home in an aggressive state that frightened everyone.
Melissa submitted edited footage showing Lily crying behind the bedroom door.
The video began after they threatened her.
The emergency hearing was scheduled for the following Thursday—exactly one week after I came home.
Evelyn arrived in a tailored navy dress. Melissa wore red and carried a thick folder. They sat beside their attorney looking calm enough to suggest they believed the result had already been decided.
Lily stayed safely with Andrew’s sister.
Rachel and I sat across the aisle.
Evelyn testified first. She described herself as a loving grandmother forced to intervene because I valued my career over my child. She cried when explaining how terrified she had been by Lily’s “violent episode.”
Melissa confirmed every word.
Then their attorney played the edited clip.
Lily’s crying filled the courtroom.
Evelyn lowered her head as though the sound hurt her.
Rachel stood.
“Mrs. Harper, did you search Natalie’s bedroom during the trip?”
“No.”
“Did you attempt to open a locked document box?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Did you tell Lily that police remove bad children?”
Evelyn looked offended.
“I would never say something so cruel.”
Rachel turned toward the judge.
“We would like to present the complete recording.”
Melissa stopped writing.
My mother slowly looked at her.
The screen showed them entering my bedroom, searching the desk, threatening Lily, and discussing temporary placement so Evelyn could gain influence over the trust.
Melissa’s face drained of color.
Then the emergency call played.
Evelyn’s voice described Lily as dangerous while Melissa could be heard in the background telling her to “make it sound urgent.”
My mother’s attorney closed his eyes.
