Chapter 6 - The Filing My Family Never Expected

The Air Force officer stepped forward and placed the sealed filing before the judge.
The envelope text remained blurred to the courtroom gallery, but the seal was enough to shift the air.
Judge Morrison looked at the document, then at General Halbrook.
“General, are you appearing under subpoena?”
“No, Your Honor. I am appearing under authorized federal certification, with a sealed Air Force court filing confirming Colonel Mercer’s rank, command status, and protected-service restrictions.”
My mother froze.
My father’s face drained of color.
Grant leaned forward as if the words had physically struck him.
Their attorney stood slowly.
“Your Honor, we request time to review—”
Judge Morrison held up one hand.
“You requested verification. It appears verification has arrived.”
General Halbrook remained straight despite the cane.
“Colonel Mercer could not defend herself fully without violating restrictions. Her silence was not deception. It was compliance.”
The courtroom absorbed that.

Compliance.
The very thing my family had twisted into guilt.
The judge opened the sealed filing just enough to review the certification. His expression became colder with every page.
Norah did not smile.
She only breathed out once.
Their attorney had been prepared for absence.
Not authority.
Grant whispered something to my father.
May you like
My father did not respond.
He was staring at the general’s salute like it had undone seventy years of Mercer certainty.
