Chapter 1 - The Word Fake

My mother leaned into the witness microphone and pointed across the federal courtroom.
“That rank is fake.”
She said it clearly.
Coldly.
Like she had practiced the sentence in front of a mirror until it sounded less like betrayal and more like grief.
I sat at the defense table in a plain black blazer with my hands folded in my lap.
Not in dress blues.
Not with ribbons.
Not with the rank I had earned through years of deployments, classified assignments, and decisions no daughter should ever have to explain to parents who never once asked what service cost.
Their attorney had argued that my uniform might influence the court.
He said the sight of military decoration could create unfair sympathy.
The judge agreed.
So I sat there dressed like a civilian while my own mother told a federal judge I had invented my career.

My name is Ava Mercer.
I am thirty-eight years old.
And I am a colonel in the United States Air Force.
Behind my mother, my father Richard sat in a navy suit, face calm and satisfied.
Beside him, my brother Grant leaned back with the soft little smirk he wore whenever someone else was being humiliated for his benefit.
This was not really about my rank.
It was about my grandmother’s veteran scholarship fund.
The one she left under my control.

The one Grant wanted.
And if they had to destroy my name to steal it, my family was ready to do that in open court.
