Chapter 7 - The Standing Ovation

Silence held the Grand Skylight Ballroom for two full seconds.

Then, the entire room exploded.

Four hundred guests stood up from their chairs in unison. The thunderous roar of applause echoed off the glass domes overhead, shaking the crystal chandeliers. Wealthy patrons clapped their hands until their palms were red, yelling brava, cheering at the top of their lungs, completely ignoring their dinner plates and champagne glasses.

"BRAVA! BRAVA!" shouted the chairman of the Philharmonic from the second row, standing on his chair to applaud.

The conductors and musicians of the string orchestra laid down their bows and began clapping enthusiastically, bowing their heads in deep respect toward the young woman standing in the center of the floor.

Maya slowly rose from her bow.

She stood tall, her crimson dress settling gracefully around her ankles. She offered no smile. She took no triumphant bows. She simply absorbed the thunderous applause with the quiet, regal dignity of a master who had already conquered the world long before tonight.

Alex Vance stood on the raised dais, his face pale, his hands limp at his sides, surrounded by four hundred standing guests who had completely forgotten about his engagement party.

Victoria stood beside him, her head lowered, her silver dress looking gaudy, cheap, and ridiculous beneath the harsh ballroom lights. The "Woman in Silver" had been completely eclipsed, reduced to an invisible footnote in her own celebration.

Maya turned her back on the cheering crowd.

She walked calmly toward the head table. Her satin pointe shoes made light, rhythmic taps against the marble as she stepped onto the raised dais, stopping three feet in front of Alex Vance.

The applause around the room slowly settled into a hushed, curious whisper as guests watched the waitress approach the billionaire.

Maya reached deep into the front pocket of her crimson dress.

She pulled out the paper she had tucked away earlier: the handwritten fifty-thousand-dollar check signed by Alex Vance.

She held it between two fingers.
