Chapter 10 - The Dawn Over the City

Six months later.
The early autumn morning sun rose over Manhattan, casting golden light across the high arched windows of the rehearsal studios at Lincoln Center. The room was vast, quiet, and smelled of polished wood, resin, and fresh coffee.
Maya stood in the center of the studio floor.
She wore comfortable black rehearsal tights, a loose gray sweater, and soft leather slippers. Her dark hair was tied back in a neat, professional bun. In her hand, she held a wooden clipboard containing the staging notes for the autumn premier of Romeo and Juliet.
Beside the piano sat twenty young dancers, watching her with deep, reverent attention as she demonstrated a complex, delicate arm movement.
"Remember," Maya said, her voice clear, calm, and inspiring. "Movement is not about demonstrating strength or seeking applause. It is about telling the truth when words are no longer enough."
The studio door opened softly.
Her assistant walked in, setting the morning edition of the New York Times on the corner of the piano bench.
Maya glanced over at the paper as the dancers took a short five-minute water break.
On the front page of the Business section was a small headline:
VANCE GLOBAL MEDIA SHARES PLUMMET FOLLOWING PUBLIC SCANDAL — BOARD VOTES TO REMOVE ALEX VANCE AS CEO.
Below the headline was a photograph of Alex Vance leaving a courthouse, looking tired, aged, and harried, surrounded by reporters asking questions about his firm's failing investments and shattered social standing. Beside the article was a smaller note announcing the official cancellation of his engagement to Victoria Cross.
Maya looked at the photograph for three seconds.
She felt no malice. She felt no lingering anger. The world of Alex Vance, his glittering ballrooms, his cheap bets, and his fragile pride belonged to a distant, irrelevant lifetime.
Maya walked over to the wide glass window overlooking the bustling city below.
The morning light bathed her face in warmth. She took a deep, clear breath, feeling the smooth, unshakeable strength anchored deep within her bones.

She turned back to her dancers, a warm, radiant smile spreading across her face.
"Alright, everyone," Maya called out softly, clapping her hands together twice. "From the top of the second act. Let us begin."
