Chapter 7 - Five Hits and One Collapse

Commander Brooks pointed downrange.

“Complete the current standard.”

Amanda nodded once.

Ryan stared.

“Sir, one hit doesn’t—”

Brooks cut him off.

“Quiet.”

That single word did what Ryan’s shouting had failed to do all morning.

It made the range listen.

Amanda settled behind the rifle.

The desert wind moved left to right.

She adjusted.

Fired.

Ping.

Adjusted again.

Fired.

Ping.

Third shot.

Ping.

No cheering.

No laughter.

Only the sharp crack, the long travel of silence, and the steel answering from 800 meters away.

By the fourth shot, Ryan’s face had gone rigid.

By the fifth, he looked like a man watching a career begin to move without him.

Ping.

Five consecutive hits.

Clean.

Controlled.

Public.

Amanda lowered the rifle and placed it safely on the bench.

One shooter in the back whispered, “Jesus.”

Nobody corrected him.

Brooks looked at the line.

“Every shooter here will repeat the evaluation under revised instruction.”

Then he turned to Ryan.

“And you will not conduct it.”

Ryan’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Amanda removed her safety glasses.

For the first time, the men could see her eyes clearly.

Calm.

Not victorious.

Not cruel.

May you like

Just done.

She looked at Ryan and said quietly, “You were louder than the standard. That’s why nobody could hear it.”
