Chapter 4 - The Shot That Killed the Laughter

Amanda Reed raised the rifle.

That was the moment the range changed, even before anyone knew her name.

Her motion had no performance in it. No nervous adjustment. No ego. No dramatic pause for the men watching.

She simply became still.

The wind flags snapped.

Dust moved along the gravel.

Somewhere behind her, one shooter gave a quiet laugh, trying to keep the old mood alive.

Amanda exhaled halfway.

Then fired.

One clean shot cracked across the Arizona range.

The sound struck the cliffs and came back thinner.

Far downrange, the 800-meter steel plate trembled.

Then came the ping.

Dead center.

The laughter stopped instantly.

No one spoke.

Ryan stared downrange like the target had personally betrayed him.

Amanda kept the rifle steady for one breath longer, then lowered it safely.

Commander Brooks moved closer, his eyes locked on her form.

He was not surprised by the hit.

That was what bothered Ryan most.

Brooks looked like a man who had been waiting for everyone else to catch up.

Ryan swallowed.

“Lucky shot,” he said.

Amanda did not answer.

That made it worse.

Ryan glanced at the shooters behind him, needing them to laugh, needing the range to return to the shape he understood.

No one gave him anything.

The steel plate still swayed faintly in the heat.

One shot.

One perfect correction to everything he had said.
