Chapter 3 - A FATHER IN KENTUCKY

Aaron answered on the first call.
He did not sound unstable.
He sounded terrified.
“Jacob is with Dana?”
Karen put the phone on speaker in a conference room away from Emily.
Officer Miller sat beside her.
Nurse Chen had taken Emily to a quiet room with crackers and a blanket while Mr. Lewis arranged for her to stay after dismissal until child-protection placement was determined.
Aaron’s voice shook.
“I haven’t seen my son in nineteen days.”
Karen sat straighter.
“What?”
Aaron lived outside Lexington with his wife, Megan, and Jacob.
Their custody order gave Aaron primary residential custody.
Dana had alternate school holidays and supervised extended visits after earlier instability involving housing and substance misuse.
According to Aaron, Dana picked Jacob up nineteen days earlier for a scheduled weekend visit in Ohio.
She never returned him.
At first she claimed the car broke down.
Then Jacob had a fever.
Then she stopped answering.
Aaron filed a police report in Kentucky and requested enforcement of the custody order.
Ohio authorities had been trying to locate Dana.
The apartment address they had?
Old.
Dana had never updated it.
That was why no one found Emily either.
Karen closed her eyes briefly.
“Mr. Webb, did Dana mention a man named Keller?”
Silence.
Then Aaron said:
“Yes.”
That answer changed everything again.
Dana contacted Aaron three months earlier asking him to consent to a private “family reunification plan.”
The idea, she claimed, was to let Jacob spend more time with her while a neutral consultant evaluated whether custody should eventually become equal.
Aaron refused.
Dana sent him a brochure from Keller Family Transition Services.
Aaron’s lawyer discovered the firm had no meaningful authority.
They ignored it.
Then Dana started telling Jacob during supervised calls that his father had “stolen him.”
Aaron documented it.
The court warned Dana.
Then came the weekend visit.
Then disappearance.
Officer Miller asked, “Did Jacob have a red backpack?”
Aaron’s voice broke.
“Yes.”
“Dinosaur keychain?”
“Yes.”
Karen closed her eyes.
The bag in Dana’s closet belonged to a child she had unlawfully kept past custody exchange.
But if Jacob left with Keller the night before Dana abandoned Emily—
where was he now?

Aaron asked the same question.
Nobody had an answer.
