Chapter 11 - TWO SIBLINGS MEET AGAIN
Emily saw Jacob again four months later.
Supervised family center.
Neutral room.
Board games nobody touched.
Jacob entered first with Aaron.
Emily came with Sarah.
For a moment the siblings simply stared at each other.
Then Jacob ran.
Emily dropped to her knees.
They hugged so hard both adults looked away.
Jacob started talking immediately.
“I thought you were mad.”
“Why?”
“Mom said you didn’t want to come.”
Emily pulled back.
“What?”
“She said you wanted to stay home because you were too old for little-kid stuff.”
Emily’s face changed.
Another lie.
Dana had told each child the other chose absence.
That discovery could have turned into anger.
Instead Emily laughed once, bitterly.
“She told me you were safe and I’d ruin everything if I called.”
Jacob frowned.
“So she lied to both.”
Emily nodded.
“Yeah.”
They sat on the floor.
Aaron stayed back.
Sarah too.
For the first half-hour, they compared stories.
Then Dr. Porter, who was present for the reunion, gently redirected them.
“You two don’t have to solve what adults did today.”
Emily looked at Jacob.
He looked relieved.
So they played Uno.
That became the first healthy reunion.
Not excavating betrayal.
Red seven.
Blue skip.
Arguments over draw-four rules.
Afterward Aaron asked Sarah privately whether he would support regular sibling contact.
“Of course.”
No legal fight.
No territorial behavior.
Just adults recognizing children already lost enough.
Over the next year, Emily and Jacob saw each other every six weeks.
Sometimes Ohio.
Sometimes Kentucky.
Video calls on Sundays.
No one required them to discuss Dana.
Sometimes they did.
