Chapter 6 - What Lily Remembered

Lily spent two nights in the hospital.

Her breathing stabilized, and doctors said she was expected to recover physically.

Emotionally, she moved carefully.

She asked whether Marcus knew where we were.

She asked whether police could lock doors better than he could.

A child-interview specialist spoke with her only after doctors confirmed she was ready.

Lily said Marcus became angry because she asked to call me again.

He took away her tablet.

Then he brought something into the room that made her breathing worse.

When she begged for her medicine, he said:

“Good girls learn to calm themselves.”

She remembered trying to reach the kitchen.

She remembered the cabinet being locked.

She remembered him standing nearby while she cried.

I sat outside the interview room with Owen.

“You saved her,” I told him.

“You came home.”

“You recognized him.”

“Because I failed to understand what I was seeing the first time.”

He had carried guilt from Jonah’s case for years.

He wondered whether questioning Caleb more forcefully during the first emergency could have changed what happened later.

I told him Caleb was responsible.

Not the frightened mother.

Not the paramedic working with incomplete information.

Not the child.

Caleb survived by distributing blame until none remained attached to him.

This time, the evidence stayed in one place.

His face.

His false identity.

His messages.

The locked medication.

And Lily’s account.
