Chapter 5 - The Life He Borrowed

Investigators searched our house after obtaining a warrant.

They found three locked document cases in the basement.

One contained identity records belonging to deceased men near Caleb’s age.

Another held prepaid phones, altered employment letters, and photographs of women taken from a distance.

The third contained files about me.

My bank accounts.

Work schedule.

Lily’s medical history.

The emergency contacts authorized to collect her from school.

Caleb had not met me accidentally at the fundraiser.

He researched me first.

I was a widowed mother with steady income, limited nearby family, and a young child desperate for a dependable adult.

He built himself into the answer to every vulnerability.

Police also recovered messages showing he had tried to increase my Chicago trip from four days to a full week.

When I refused, he told someone through an encrypted account:

Four is enough. By the time she returns, everyone will believe the child caused it herself.

The account was connected to a private online community where people exchanged methods for hiding abuse beneath claims of discipline, accidents, and parental exhaustion.

Caleb had discussed Lily’s allergies there.

He called them useful.

I read only one page before becoming physically sick.

The man I married had not lost control.

He had prepared.

My early return had interrupted a plan he expected to explain after Lily could no longer contradict him.
