Chapter 8 - On His Feet

At evening formation, Ethan’s uniform was clean enough to pass and his body ached badly enough that standing still felt like another obstacle. The gray morning had become a sharp orange sunset over the training grounds. Mud still clung beneath his fingernails no matter how hard he had scrubbed.

Maddox walked the line slowly.

He stopped in front of Ethan.

For a second, Ethan expected another correction. Chin up. Boots aligned. Eyes forward. Something.

Instead, Maddox held out a small strip of fabric torn from Ethan’s pack during the trench crawl. The barbed wire had taken it when he twisted low and kept moving.

“You lost this,” Maddox said.

Ethan took it. “Thank you, Gunnery Sergeant.”

Maddox looked at him for a long moment.

“Keep it.”

Ethan blinked. “Yes, Gunnery Sergeant.”

“Not because you got stuck,” Maddox said. “Because you didn’t stay stuck.”

Then he moved down the line.

Ethan closed his fist around the muddy fabric.

Years later, he would forget some of the jokes, some of the shouted orders, some of the exact sequence of that training day. But he would remember the trench. The wire. The inch in front of him. The moment he said, Not today, and meant it before he felt strong enough to believe it.

There is no easy day in the Marine Corps.

But those who choose the title do not come looking for easy.
