Chapter 4 - Not Today

Ethan pressed his cheek into the wet dirt and closed his eyes for one breath. The mud was cold against his skin. The wire hummed faintly above him in the wind. Somewhere beyond the obstacle course, boots pounded gravel and another instructor shouted cadence.
His body wanted one thing.
Stop.
Not quit forever. Just stop for now. Just rest. Just let someone else solve the trench, the wire, the rifle slipping into the water, the ache in his shoulders, the fear that maybe he had joined the wrong world.
Then he thought of Ryan.
Not the Marine everyone admired. The brother who had sat with him on the garage floor the night before Ethan shipped out and said, “You’re going to think you have to become somebody else. Don’t. Just become the version of you that doesn’t run from hard things.”
Ethan opened his eyes.
Maddox’s words still hung above him.
This is where quitters stop.
Ethan’s fingers dug into the mud.
“Not today.”
He pulled the rifle tighter to his chest. Shifted one shoulder down. Exhaled until his ribs compressed. Twisted his hips through the narrow space and felt the wire drag across his pack again, but this time he did not panic. He got smaller. Lower. Smarter.
The mud sucked at his uniform like it wanted to keep him.
He moved anyway.
One inch.
Then another.
Then another.

Behind him, the other recruits stopped breathing loudly.
They were watching a lesson they could not learn from a classroom.
