Ben did not sell the cottage.
Everyone expected him to.
Sarah asked if he wanted to.
He stood at the dock one cold November morning and said:
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because then she still gets to decide what it means.”
So he changed the rules.
Silver Lake no longer operated on family assumptions.
Written calendar.
Named guests.
No shared codes.
No lending to friends without owner approval.
No hidden arrangements.
Diane lost automatic access for six months.
Not punishment.
Trust rebuilding.
Karen lost it indefinitely.
Tyler did not.
That mattered.
Ben called Jason.
“If Tyler wants lake time, he can come with you or us.”
Jason hesitated.
“After everything?”
“He didn’t rent my house.”
Tyler cried when his father told him.
Karen became furious.
“You’re cutting me out but rewarding him.”
Ben answered:
“I’m refusing to make a child pay for his mother.”
That sentence traveled through the family.
Some relatives called Ben harsh.
Others called him too generous.
