Chapter 10 - THE PRIVATE LOCKBOX
The second lockbox contained one more secret.
A black envelope hidden beneath the rental ledger.
Inside were photocopies of family documents.
Arthur’s will.
Ben’s deed.
Old property-tax statements.
And a draft petition written by an attorney Karen consulted but never retained.
The document proposed challenging Arthur Bennett’s estate distribution based on alleged “undue influence” by Ben during Arthur’s final years.
Ben stared.
The statute of limitations issues alone made the claim weak.
The evidence made it weaker.
But again—
winning was not always the point.
Karen had planned leverage.
Attached was a handwritten note:
If Ben discovers rentals, threaten estate review. Mom will support unfairness argument.
Diane went white when shown.
“I would never.”
Karen had apparently believed otherwise.
Or intended to pressure her.
The most painful attachment was a list of family statements Karen had been collecting.
Diane once saying:
“Arthur always favored Ben.”
A cousin saying:
“Ben basically lived there near the end.”
Jason saying during divorce mediation:
“Karen has always considered Silver Lake partly hers.”
Karen converted casual resentment into future evidence.
Not false, exactly.
