Chapter 7 - THE MAN IN THE FRAME
Ray turned himself in thirty-six hours later.
He walked into a county sheriff’s office wearing jeans, a gray sweatshirt, and no watch.
Sergeant Bennett called Daniel personally.
“He has counsel. He’s cooperating.”
Daniel laughed without humor.
“After hiding.”
“Yes.”
“Don’t call that courage.”
“I didn’t.”
Good answer.
Ray admitted disabling cameras.
Admitted helping move Lily.
Admitted lying in the original incident report.
He denied knowing Ethan would attack her.
Investigators believed that part might be true.
But then they asked why he came to the science building at all.
Ray answered:
Dr. Kline called him.
Not officially.
Privately.
Kline told him a student was threatening to release “misinterpreted proprietary data” and needed to be prevented from leaving with confidential research materials until legal counsel could respond.
Ray knew that was not a normal security request.
He went anyway.
Why?
Because Renshaw Materials donated heavily to Halston.
And Ray’s security department had recently received a promised $600,000 technology grant tied to the same corporate foundation.
Ray had been told repeatedly that maintaining the sponsor relationship mattered.
He did not think he was committing a crime when he entered the hallway.
He told himself he was keeping order.
Then Ethan hit Lily.
After that, every decision was fear.
Disable cameras.
Move Lily.
Create cleaner discovery location.
Call EMS once she looked worse.
Lie.
Fear does not reduce responsibility.
Sometimes it explains the sequence.
Ray also turned over his personal phone.
On it was the message from Kline at 11:24 p.m.:
Need help containing student issue. No formal report yet. Keep cameras limited until we know what we're dealing with.
Daniel read the message and felt something inside him go cold.
Containing student issue.
