Chapter 2

Mara was not kitchen staff.
Not the way they thought.
Her name was real, but nearly everything else about her was carefully built. The limp was exaggerated. The softness in her voice was practiced. The habit of lowering her eyes had taken longer to learn than most people would believe.
She had come to the Crown Heron under a federal assignment connected to three dead agents, missing weapons routes, and a network moving through New Orleans river docks.
At first, Dante Bellafior was supposed to be the target.
His name was on every shadow.

His casino touched every shipment.
His men guarded every door.
But after months inside the kitchen, Mara saw the truth.
Someone was using Dante’s empire like a borrowed gun.
Shipments changed after he approved them. Money vanished through accounts he did not touch. Witnesses disappeared after meetings he never attended. Every trail led back to Dante, but the mistakes were too neat, too perfect.
Someone was framing him from inside.
And that someone was Nico Bellafior.
Dante’s adopted brother.
The charming one.
The loyal one.
The man who kissed Dante’s cheek in public and sold his routes in private.
Mara watched Nico move through the casino like a man who believed every invisible person was furniture.
He spoke freely near her.
He left doors open near her.
He once laughed while she mopped spilled wine near the service elevator and said, “Nobody watches the help.”

Mara kept mopping.
And remembered every word.
