Chapter 1

Everyone at the Crown Heron Casino knew Mara Voss, but nobody truly saw her.

They knew the limp.

They knew the stained white chef coat.

They knew the way she kept her eyes low when guards stepped into her path, the way she apologized before anyone had even accused her of being in the way.

In the back kitchen, they called her the kitchen ghost.

When the men in suits got drunk enough, they added another word.

Fat.

The fat kitchen ghost.

Mara heard it while carrying soup through the service hall. She heard it while stacking plates near the prep station. She heard it when guards laughed behind her back, loud enough to hurt, quiet enough to deny.

She never corrected them.

Men who underestimated people were the easiest men to study.

And for eleven months, Mara had studied every hallway, every private elevator, every coded door, every nervous glance inside the Crown Heron Casino.

The casino rose over New Orleans like a golden lie, all chandeliers and velvet ropes on the surface, all money, fear, and buried sins underneath.

Dante Bellafior owned it.

At thirty-six, Dante had the kind of quiet power that made louder men look childish. He never shouted. He never repeated himself. He ran the Crown Heron, the river shipments, the union favors, and half the city’s dirty promises from behind polished doors.

He noticed everything.

Or so he believed.

But he never noticed Mara.

May you like

Not really.

That was his first mistake.
