Chapter 5 - Leah Chose The Meeting

Vanessa reached for my phone.

I pulled it away.

“Don't.”

“That’s my daughter.”

“And my message.”

Her face hardened.

Then softened.

“Right.”

That was probably painful.

I showed her anyway.

Vanessa read both lines.

“She could be under pressure.”

“Yes.”

“She could be trying to protect herself.”

“Yes.”

“She could—”

“Or she could mean exactly what she wrote.”

Vanessa looked toward the window.

That possibility frightened her most.

I typed:

WHY?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Nothing.

Vanessa checked the clock.

1:36.

“Julian's four o'clock meeting.”

“What is it?”

“A certification review.”

“For what?”

“Your casualty case.”

My stomach tightened.

“Three years later.”

“The incident was reopened last month.”

“Why?”

“Someone sent an anonymous packet to an oversight office.”

“Leah?”

“I assumed.”

“You assume a lot.”

“Yes.”

She did not fight it.

“What does Voss want you to certify?”

“That the woman reported alive after the fire was not you.”

I stared.

“Meaning Sarah Mercer.”

“Yes.”

“He wants you to say Sarah existed.”

“She did.”

“As a separate person.”

“Yes.”

“So the dead Rachel stays dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why would anyone believe that?”

“Because Sarah Mercer has records.”

I felt sick.

Medical.

Lease.

Bank.

Travel.

Three years of my life under that name.

Julian's network had not merely hidden me.

It had built enough administrative reality around Sarah that she could be treated as a person.

“Whose photograph is attached?”

Vanessa said nothing.

I understood before she answered.

“Leah.”

Her face tightened.

“Some of them.”

I stared.

“He built Sarah out of both of us.”

“Apparently.”

Now the similar mask mattered.

Two women.

One false identity.

Different appearances hidden under generic clothing when witnesses mattered.

Maybe the canteen was not theater.

Maybe it was Julian reminding us how easy substitution had been.

“What happens if you sign?”

“Rachel Carter remains legally deceased while the Sarah Mercer records are treated as a separate protected identity.”

“And Leah?”

“Her involvement stays buried.”

“What involvement?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“That is what Julian has held over me for three years.”

Still another layer.

I wanted to hit something.

Instead:

“Tell me.”

“I don't know all of it.”

“Tell me what you know.”

Leah had been the first analyst to find duplicate casualty identities.

She had copied a list of eleven names.

Some genuinely dead.

Some officially dead but alive under alternate identities.

She came to me because she thought the list had been abused beyond witness protection.

We met at the depot.

The fire happened.

Then Leah vanished with the only complete copy.

“You think Voss has it.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“If Julian had the full list, he wouldn't still need Leah.”

That was important.

“So Leah has leverage.”

“Yes.”

“And you have spent three years treating her like a hostage.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“I’m her mother.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No.”

She inhaled slowly.

“I have spent three years not knowing which of her messages were hers.”

That was better.

My phone buzzed again.

BASE CHAPEL.

1415.

COME ALONE.

Vanessa read my face.

“Leah?”

“Maybe.”

“You're not going.”

I laughed.

“You got ten seconds.”

She stopped.

I showed her.

Her face went pale.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“Rachel.”

“She said alone.”

“You don't know she's free.”

“You don't know she isn't.”

Vanessa grabbed the desk.

“Do not make my mistakes just because you hate me.”

That slowed me.

Not enough to stop.

“What mistake?”

“Treating a message as proof of what I already wanted to believe.”

I stared.

That one was good.

Then my phone buzzed again.

One final message:

IF VANESSA COMES, I LEAVE.

I looked at her.

Vanessa read it.

Her eyes closed.

Then she stepped away from the desk.

“Go.”

I waited.

She forced the word out again.

May you like

“Go.”

It was the first time since I returned that Vanessa let somebody else decide how close she was allowed to get to her daughter.
