Chapter 30 - THE FIRST NAME

Three weeks later, Leah returned to the gym.
Not to fight.
Not yet.
She stood beside the cage while Marcus coached two beginners.
“Again.”
One fighter tapped.
The other released immediately.
Marcus nodded.
“That's the whole point.”
Daniel watched from the wall.
David sat several chairs away.
He and Dustin had started exchanging letters.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
Something smaller.
More honest.
Federal prosecutors were building cases against Vale and Voss.
Halcyon had lost its government contracts.
News outlets had started asking questions.
Daniel had declined every interview.
He was tired of people turning complicated failures into simple heroes.
Leah walked over.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She smiled.
“Good answer.”
Daniel handed her a coffee.
Then the federal investigator entered.
No greeting.
Folder in hand.
Daniel knew immediately.
“What now?”
She placed the folder on the table.
“We recovered the oldest Site Six backup.”
“How old?”
“2008.”
Daniel frowned.
“That predates my program.”
“Yes.”
Everyone went quiet.
Marcus stepped closer.
“So Miller wasn't the beginning.”
“No.”
Daniel opened the folder.
The original Site Six proposal had been written before Keystone ever approached his unit.
Before Shaw was injured.
Before Daniel signed anything.
His 2009 program hadn't inspired Site Five.
It hadn't even inspired the idea behind it.
They had been looking for military legitimacy before Daniel ever entered the picture.
Leah turned the page.
A list of prospective authority figures.
Most names were crossed out.
Raymond Cole.
Another Marine instructor.
Two Army trainers.
Daniel Miller.
His name had a mark beside it.
SELECTED.
Daniel stared.
“They chose me.”
The investigator nodded.
“Before you met Voss.”
Marcus looked at the next page.
“Who selected you?”
No answer.
The signature block had been damaged.
Only one line remained readable.
PROGRAM ORIGINATOR.
Below it:
E. SHAW.
Daniel stopped.
Leah saw his face.
“Dad?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Evan Shaw.
The corporal whose injury had supposedly caused the 2009 program to collapse.
The man Daniel had spent seventeen years believing was the victim who ended everything.
Marcus whispered:
“That can't be the same Shaw.”
The investigator placed a second photograph down.
Recent.
Airport security image.
Taken eight days earlier.
An older Evan Shaw walked through Dulles International Airport.
Alive.
Healthy.
Carrying a Halcyon security credential.
Leah stared.
“I thought he disappeared after the injury.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“So did I.”
The investigator slid one final page across the table.
Passenger destination:
Zurich.
Beside his name was an internal travel authorization.
SITE 7.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Nobody spoke.
Then Leah asked the only question that mattered.
“If Shaw was running this before you ever met him…”
She looked at the old photograph.
“…what exactly happened in 2009?”
Daniel stared at the man he remembered lying unconscious on a training floor.
For seventeen years, that moment had been the beginning of his guilt.
Now he wasn't sure it had been an accident.
He wasn't even sure it had been real.
Daniel closed the folder.
“Find Shaw.”
The investigator nodded.
Daniel looked through the cage toward the bright front windows.
For the first time since Leah went into the hospital, he understood something worse than being followed.
They hadn't reopened his past.
May you like
They had built it for him.
And somewhere in Zurich, Evan Shaw already knew they were coming.
