Chapter 27 - MARCUS

Marcus's phone was off.
Gym closed.
Apartment empty.
Daniel stood inside Marcus's office.
Leah beside him.
She looked at the desk.
“No.”
Daniel didn't answer.
“He helped us.”
“Yes.”
“He gave us the video.”
“Yes.”
“He saved the evidence.”
“Yes.”
Leah turned.
“So you're saying he was Director?”
“No.”
Daniel opened a drawer.
Empty.
“I'm saying Dustin heard something.”
Federal agents searched the building.
Nothing.
Then Leah noticed the framed photograph.
Marcus with a group of fighters.
Five years earlier.
Carver in the background.
On Marcus's wrist:
A black band.
David had worn the same kind in one Site Five photograph.
Daniel removed the frame.
On the back:
HPG-A7.
Halcyon Performance Group.
Leah stepped back.
“He worked for them.”
The investigator entered.
“We found Marcus's financials.”
Daniel looked over.
“Tell me.”
“Monthly payments.”
“For what?”
“Consulting.”
Leah shook her head.
“No.”
The investigator continued.
“Started six years ago.”
Daniel looked toward the cage.
Marcus had recognized him the moment he walked into the gym.
Everyone thought it was because Daniel was famous among older instructors.
Maybe it was.
Maybe it wasn't.
Leah whispered.
“He knew exactly who you were.”
Daniel's phone rang.
Marcus.
He answered.
“Where are you?”
Marcus's breathing came fast.
“Don't let David leave federal custody.”
Daniel looked at Leah.
“Why?”
“Because David's lying.”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“About what?”
“Site Six.”
“Where are you?”
Marcus ignored him.
“I wasn't Director.”
“I didn't say you were.”
“Dustin did.”
Daniel went silent.
Marcus continued.
“I know because Carver used that nickname for me after I started feeding Halcyon false data.”
Daniel stared ahead.
“You were inside.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Six years.”
“Working for who?”
Marcus hesitated.
That told Daniel enough.
“Marcus.”
“The Justice Department.”
Leah's eyes widened.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“And Daniel?”
“What?”
“Vale knows David is alive.”
A loud impact came through the phone.
Marcus grunted.
Then silence.
“Marcus?”
Nothing.
The call stayed connected.
Daniel heard footsteps.
Then another voice picked up the phone.
Calm.
Male.
Older.
“Gunnery Sergeant Miller.”
Daniel knew the voice immediately.
May you like
Nathan Vale.
“It's been a long time.”
