Chapter 7 - DR. NATALIE SHAW

Natalie Shaw did not disappear.

She walked into the league's independent review office the next morning with her attorney.

Forty-six.

Sports neurologist.

Former medical consultant for three seasons.

She wore no disguise.

Had no dramatic secret identity.

She had simply refused to show her face on the tunnel camera because she knew Mason monitored security feeds.

Her explanation began at Cedar Ridge.

Lily hit her head.

Natalie evaluated her.

Symptoms:

Headache.

Light sensitivity.

Mild balance impairment.

No loss of consciousness.

No hospitalization.

Natalie removed her from competition.

Standard concussion protocol.

Emma had escorted Lily.

A volunteer scanned Emma's athlete band while opening the encounter.

Natalie noticed the wrong header later and emailed correction.

Nothing mysterious yet.

Then Lily's return-to-activity note appeared.

Natalie saw Lily listed eligible in the championship roster.

She emailed league medical administration.

Has full clearance been completed?

No response.

Again.

The rehab note in portal is not unrestricted competition clearance.

Someone answered:

Status reviewed by medical operations.

Natalie asked:

By physician?

No response.

Three days before the championship, her old consultant credential stopped working.

Why?

Her contract had ended months earlier.

Normally, temporary archive access remained active through the season.

This time it was deactivated.

Natalie believed it was retaliation.

The league said cybersecurity cleanup.

No proof of motive.

Then why was she at the championship?

She bought a ticket.

Sat with spectators.

During warm-ups she saw Lily compete.

She went to event medical.

Asked for the lead physician.

Told them Lily's clearance was incomplete.

They said:

“System shows eligible.”

Natalie gave them her original note.

They said they would check.

Then the final started approaching.

Natalie went to the tunnel area because she knew secondary medical access ran beside Tunnel C.

She saw Emma outside.

Saw Mason inside.

He took Emma's bib.

Scanned it.

Closed the door.

Natalie understood immediately.

“They still had my hold attached to Emma.”

Andrea asked:

“Why didn't you open the door for Emma?”

Natalie looked directly at her.

“By the time Reed left, final start sequence was active.”

Once a lane start system armed, opening a competitor access door could trigger a safety stop across the course.

“Could you have triggered that?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Emma's mother leaned forward.

“Why?”

Natalie did not hide.

“Because I wanted the camera record preserved before anybody could say Emma had simply arrived late.”

Kara stared.

“You left my daughter outside to preserve evidence.”

Natalie swallowed.

“For about ninety seconds.”

“Ninety seconds was the final.”

“Yes.”

That was the ugly part.

Natalie could have hit the emergency stop.

She believed Mason would override her verbally, the crowd would see confusion, and the medical-file problem would get buried after.

So she chose proof.

She opened the door after Mason left.

Placed Emma's bib outside.

Spoke toward the service camera because she knew safety audio recorded continuously.

Then went to the backup control room and queued the clip to the arena screen.

Publicly.

During the ceremony.

Andrea asked:

“Was that authorized?”

“No.”

“Did you understand you were involving two minors in a public confrontation?”

Natalie's face tightened.

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

“Because private emails had failed.”

That explained it.

It did not excuse all of it.

Natalie's former consulting privileges were formally terminated.

The league also had to confront what she had exposed.

Both could be true.

Then Emma asked Natalie directly:

“What did you mean about Lily?”

Natalie looked at Lily.

“The hold Mason used against you belonged to her.”

Lily nodded.

She knew that now.

Natalie continued.

“But that isn't the part that scared me.”

Everyone went quiet.

Natalie opened her file.

Lily's championship eligibility had been manually changed from:

RESTRICTED

to:

CLEARED

twice.

Once after Morgan Price uploaded the rehab note.

Then again—

two days before the championship.

The first manual clearance had been reversed automatically during a medical audit.

Someone changed it back.

A second time.

After Natalie warned the league the paperwork was incomplete.

That was not an old data mistake.

Someone had made an active current decision.
