Chapter 12 - THE TROPHY

The league vacated the championship result.
Not stripped from Lily.
Vacated.
Important difference.
The official notice said:
Final outcome cannot be certified due denial of scheduled finalist access and materially inaccurate live competition representation.
It did not say Lily cheated.
Because she didn't.
It also said:
Lily Bennett's physical run remains a valid completed course performance but is not a certifiable championship final result.
Lily read that carefully.
Then asked:
“Do I keep the trophy?”
Andrea Stone answered:
“Not yet.”
“Good.”
Thomas looked at his daughter.
“You wanted it.”
“I wanted to win it.”
Different.
The trophy went into league custody.
Emma's final entry fee was refunded.
Travel costs reimbursed.
Not damages.
Not hush money.
Basic reimbursement because the event denied her start through its own failure.
Emma's mother accepted.
She also continued a civil consultation regarding Mason's shove.
Separate issue.
The girls' development-team selection was postponed.
That made both of them furious.
Another month.
More training.
More uncertainty.
But neither wanted the committee using the broken final.
Then the event offered a solution.
Independent rerun.
Six weeks later.
Different venue.
Different director.
Neutral medical team.
Same championship course specifications.
All four original finalists invited.
Participation voluntary.
Emma said yes first.
Lily waited until a physician signed her full return-to-play clearance.
Then said yes.
That delay mattered more to her than she expected.
Mason Reed was terminated as event director after the investigation closed.
Cause:
Physical misconduct toward an athlete.
Knowingly mischaracterizing Emma's final status.
Failure to pause competition upon encountering a material athlete medical-record conflict.
Approval of misleading ghost telemetry.
Failure to preserve athlete safeguarding during the ceremony confrontation.
The finding did not say he falsified Lily's medical clearance.
Because evidence did not support that.
He appealed the termination.
His right.
Alicia Grant lost authority to independently change medical status and received a suspension from event operations pending retraining and credential review.
Morgan Price remained suspended.
Natalie Shaw could not work league events for one year because of unauthorized systems access and public disclosure involving minors.
She also became a witness in the medical-governance review.
No one emerged spotless.
Then Mason requested one meeting with Emma.
Through lawyers.
Emma declined.
He wrote instead.
One page.
I saw the name mismatch. I had time to stop the final. I decided the green status on Bennett and red status on Carter were sufficient to continue. I was wrong.
Then:
At the ceremony I was angry because you made the problem public in front of the arena. That did not give me the right to put my hands on you.
Emma read it.
Folded it.
Put it in her equipment bag.
Her mother asked:
“Do you forgive him?”
Emma looked at her.
“Why does everybody want the end before the middle is finished?”
Kara nodded.
Fair.
Then Lily received a message from Mason too.
Shorter.
You did not ask me to protect your result. I treated the event as if protecting the schedule protected you. It didn't.
May you like
Lily did not respond.
She was busy preparing for the race she should have had the first time.
