Aurora violently snatched her carbon-fiber prosthetic leg off the floor, pulling it tight against her chest like a shield, her back pressing hard against the steel supply shelves as she tried to pull herself away from him.

Owen slowly sank down onto his knees on the cold tile floor in front of her.

The movement was deliberate, stripping away every ounce of his towering stature until he was sitting at eye level with his young housemaid. When he spoke, his voice was barely a breath, carrying a chilling, absolute truth that shattered her entire reality.

"You weren’t supposed to survive," Owen whispered.

She stared at Owen Callahan as the memory of three years ago—the blinding headlights, the roar of an accelerating engine, the crushing weight of metal—re-aligned itself in her mind, revealing a terrifying, murderous truth.
