Chapter 1 - THE TACTILE SLIP

The west hallway of the sprawling Chicago mansion was a cold monument to unyielding wealth. Beneath the soft, warm glow of recessed sconces, polished white marble reflected the shadows of quiet servants who moved like ghosts through the estate. It was nearly midnight. The estate was hushed, save for the faint hum of central climate control and the steady, rhythmic step of Aurora, a twenty-four-year-old housemaid tasked with the late-night maintenance of the private quarters.

Aurora wore a crisp, knee-length black-and-white maid uniform, her long brown hair pulled back into a neat ponytail. In her left arm, she cradled a heavy plastic caddy filled with specialized polish, microfiber cloths, and spray bottles of cleaning solution. To any casual observer, her walk was smooth, though slightly measured. Beneath the fabric of her black tights, however, her right lower limb was constructed of lightweight, high-grade carbon fiber—a prosthetic replacing her leg below the knee, the result of a devastating car crash three years ago.

As she passed a tall arched window overlooking the dark estate gardens, a sharp, sickening click echoed near her right knee. The locking mechanism of her socket alignment shifted slightly out of place.

A surge of blinding pain shot straight up her residual limb. Her knee buckled instantly.

Aurora gasped, her breath catching in her throat as she threw her right arm out, slamming her hand against the cold marble wall to keep from crashing down. The caddy rattled violently in her grip, liquid sloshing against the plastic rims. She closed her eyes, her knuckles turning stark white against the stone wall as she waited for the throbbing ache in her stump to recede.

"You’ve been dragging your feet all evening."

The voice was low, deep, and cut through the hallway with terrifying authority.

Aurora opened her eyes and looked toward the far end of the corridor. Standing near the entrance to the private library was Owen Callahan, the fifty-two-year-old head of the most feared syndicate in Chicago. Standing over six feet tall with broad, imposing shoulders, his dark hair silvering at the temples, Owen wore an open-collar black silk shirt and dark tailored trousers. His dark eyes were fixed on her with cold, unreadable scrutiny.

Aurora swallowed her pain, forcing her spine to straighten and easing her weight off the wall. She looked directly at her employer, masking her agony behind a wall of quiet, unyielding pride.

"Old injury," Aurora said flatly.
