Chapter 12 - THE BONUS LEDGER

The second ranking was not a separate scoring system. It was a commercial-performance ledger used to calculate bonuses tied to athlete results, promotional exposure and equipment claims. Meridian’s marketing division had kept Sarah’s actual score because the number supported its assertion that the target system could record elite-level precision.

Publicly, Sarah was disqualified.

Internally, her result remained valuable.

Sarah stared at the ledger without speaking.

“They called me a cheat and still used my score.”

Rebecca nodded.

The document listed a large sponsor-performance bonus awarded to Meridian’s technical program after the selection final. It also showed payments to the training center managed by Owen and consulting fees to Kessler’s private firm.

Owen claimed he learned about the ledger only recently through archived tax records.

Sarah no longer accepted his memory without verification.

David Kim confirmed the amounts. Owen’s training center received money after Sarah’s disqualification, but the payment was made under a general program-support clause rather than directly to Owen. Kessler’s firm received a separate consulting bonus.

The distinction mattered.

Owen benefited institutionally and chose silence.

Kessler benefited personally while directing the concealment.

That strengthened the motive against Kessler and Meridian.

Then the case appeared to collapse at the worst possible moment.

The national league ruled that although Sarah’s disciplinary finding would be vacated, the eight-year-old selection result could not automatically create a present national-team place. Team selection rules required current eligibility, current qualification and medical clearance.

Sports commentators treated the decision as another betrayal.

Sarah did not.

She had never expected an eight-year-old result to send her directly onto a modern team.

What hurt was Meridian’s response. Its lawyers announced that the ruling proved Sarah had no current sporting claim and suggested her pursuit of historic corrections was motivated by compensation.

The company offered a confidential settlement.

A significant payment.

An acknowledgment that “procedural irregularities” occurred.

No admission of deliberate concealment.

Sarah’s permanent silence.

Her mother urged her to consider it. Ben asked how much it was. Rebecca said they should review the terms before reacting emotionally.

Sarah read the offer.

It would clear the debts still hanging over her family.

It could let her stop cleaning floors.

It could pay for a degree.

For one night, she wanted to sign.

Then she reached the clause requiring her to withdraw support for any investigation of the old target-system records.

Meridian was not buying peace.

It was buying the rest of the evidence.

Sarah declined.

The next morning the company leaked the existence of the offer and implied she demanded more money.

Her phone filled with abuse.

Paula informed her that arena donors were reconsidering several programs because of the controversy.

Ben found her sitting on the back steps after midnight.

“I would’ve signed,” he admitted.

Sarah nodded.

“I know.”

“That doesn’t mean you should.”

She looked at him.

He continued.

“I’ve spent eight years thinking the best thing you could do was help me. I don’t want you making this decision because of what I cost.”

Sarah began crying.

Not loudly.

Just enough to stop pretending she was unaffected.

The overlooked clue arrived through the bonus ledger’s supporting notes. Kessler’s consulting payment carried a project code Sarah recognized from Peter’s original files.

RAVEN.

The code appeared in a later engineering report concerning an unresolved defect in a different target model.

Meridian had not buried Sarah’s score only to protect one event.

It had used the concealment as a template for handling later technical complaints.

If those complaints remained unresolved, current athletes might still be competing on equipment whose limitations were not fully disclosed.

Sarah’s fight had become larger than restoring one name.
