Chapter 10 - THE REASON SHE WAS CHOSEN

Meridian resisted releasing the equipment-room footage until Rebecca obtained a protective order allowing independent experts to review it without exposing unrelated commercial information. The video had no sound. It showed Sarah handing her rifle to an official after the final, then leaving the room under escort after being told her result was under review.

Seven minutes later Peter Voss entered.

Kessler followed.

Peter opened the rifle case and examined the equipment. Kessler pointed toward a table outside the main camera angle. Peter removed a small component from a separate container and placed it beside the rifle.

The camera did not capture the exact instant of insertion.

It captured enough to establish that officials introduced an additional component into the inspection environment after Sarah surrendered the equipment.

The disciplinary photographs were taken afterward.

That destroyed the original report’s claim that the component had been documented in the rifle at handover.

The national league’s integrity office reopened Sarah’s case immediately.

Meridian’s public response became more aggressive. The company argued its staff may have been conducting a comparison test and that the footage lacked context. It also accused Peter of breaching confidentiality and Owen of misremembering technical instructions.

Sarah refused to respond through social media.

She attended the formal hearing.

During questioning, Rebecca asked the investigator why Sarah had been selected for disqualification rather than the event being paused for technical review. The commercial emails supplied the answer: Sarah refused Meridian’s exclusive likeness agreement, while Emma had signed.

That choice made Sarah expendable.

The real motive therefore combined money, reputation and control.

Meridian needed a certified event to support its equipment claims.

It needed a champion under contract.

It needed the target defect kept out of public view until the supply agreement closed.

Sarah’s result threatened all three.

Emma benefited, but did not design the scheme.

Owen enabled it through silence.

Peter physically participated.

Kessler directed the technical process.

Meridian executives approved the concealment.

The hierarchy was now clear.

Then Emma asked to testify.

Sarah had not expected that.

Emma admitted she knew Meridian preferred her as its promotional athlete and that Peter warned her of a possible problem with Sarah’s equipment before the final. She denied knowing evidence would be introduced after Sarah surrendered the rifle.

“I wanted her out,” Emma said.

The room went still.

“I wanted the selection place. I wanted the contract. I knew if Sarah stayed in front of me, Meridian would have to explain why they were spending their campaign on the athlete in second place.”

Sarah looked at her.

Emma continued.

“I didn’t ask them to frame her. But when they said they found something, I was relieved.”

It was not absolution.

It was the first time Emma told the truth without protecting her brand.

The hearing recessed after the testimony.

Outside, Emma approached Sarah.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

Emma accepted that.

Then she asked whether Sarah intended to return to competition.

“I haven’t decided.”

“You should.”

Sarah looked at her sharply.

“Don’t turn me into the opponent you need to make yourself feel better.”

Emma stepped back.

Sarah had finally stopped allowing other people to define her return.

The chapter ended with the integrity office issuing an interim finding that the original equipment evidence could not support Sarah’s disqualification.

For the first time in eight years, her case was officially moving toward correction.

But Meridian challenged the finding before it became final.

The company had one remaining argument.

Even if the equipment allegation failed, the target-system defect meant Sarah’s winning result could not be certified.

They intended to clear her name while keeping her score erased.
