Chapter 8 - The Aftermath of the Storm

Khloe didn't just take one step back.

The kinetic energy transferred through her torso lifted her entirely off her bare feet. She flew backward through the air for six full feet, her legs kicking out beneath her, before landing hard on her upper back and sliding another three feet across the polished red mat.

She came to a stop right at the base of the trophy wall. The sudden impact rattled the glass shelves above her, causing dozens of brass and silver championship trophies to chime and shudder in their frames.

Silence fell over the gym—a silence so absolute, so violent, that the soft hum of the air conditioning unit overhead sounded like a hurricane.

The fifteen adult students stood frozen in sheer horror and disbelief. Their mouths were open; their eyes were wide. They looked from the sliding skid mark on the mat where Khloe now lay, back to the tall, bare-chested man standing in the center of the ring.

Khloe lay on her back, gasping for air. The wind had been entirely removed from her lungs. She rolled onto her side, clutching her chest, her eyes wide with shock and pure, unadulterated terror. She wasn't bleeding; no bones were broken. Daniel’s control had been so absolute that he had delivered maximum displacement force without fracturing her sternum. But her arrogance had been completely demolished in a fraction of a second.

Daniel lowered his hands.

His chest rose and fell in a slow, perfectly steady cadence. Not a single drop of sweat had broken out on his forehead. The explosive power he had just displayed had consumed no more energy than taking a quiet breath.

He turned his head slowly, his eyes sweeping across the frozen faces of the adult students, then over to Arthur, who remained standing by his chair, trembling slightly, his head bowed in quiet, profound respect.

Across the gym, sitting on the wooden bench, Lily slowly put down her orange crayon. She did not look shocked or frightened. She simply looked up at her father, her small face filled with a calm, quiet pride that needed no words.
