Chapter 3 - Shedding the Shell

Daniel slowly turned his head toward the lobby bench. Lily was standing up now, her tiny hands clutching the hem of her oversized white uniform. Her bottom lip trembled slightly, not out of fear for herself, but because she recognized the look that had settled over her father's eyes.

"Dad..." she whispered, her soft voice cutting through the thick silence of the gym.

Daniel walked over to the bench. His limp was still visible, the heavy steel-toed boot dragging slightly against the polished wood trim. He reached out with a large, rough hand and gently rested his palm on top of her head, his thumb lightly stroking her brown hairline.

"Keep coloring, Bug," Daniel said softly. His eyes met hers, offering a warm, untroubled smile that existed purely for her reassurance. "I'll be right back."

Lily looked into his eyes, saw the unwavering stillness there, and slowly nodded. She sat back down, picking up her crayon, though her eyes remained fixed on her father’s back.

Daniel turned and walked to the edge of the blue-and-red mat.

He stopped at the border where the polished hardwood met the high-density foam training surface. Without taking his eyes off the floor, he reached down and unlaced his heavy steel-toed boots. He untied the thick knot with methodical, practiced efficiency, slipped his feet out of the leather, and set the boots side-by-side against the wall. They sat perfectly parallel, aligned precisely with the edge of the trim.

Next came his faded gray wool socks. He folded them neatly and placed them inside the collar of his boots.

Finally, Daniel reached for the bottom hem of his sweat-damp gray work shirt. He unbuttoned the top two buttons and pulled the heavy fabric up over his head in one smooth, sweeping motion.

A collective, audible gasp rippled through the fifteen adult students gathered around the perimeter.

Without the oversized, baggy shirt, the man standing at the edge of the mat was unrecognizable. Daniel did not possess the smooth, vacuum-pumped physique of a modern bodybuilder or a gym-bred fitness model. His frame was built of thick, dense, functional muscle—a wall of dense chest tissue, broad shoulders that tied seamlessly into a thick neck, and deep, defined abdominal walls.

More striking, however, were the markings carved into his skin.

Across his right shoulder and upper chest ran three pale, jagged, non-graphic surgical entry scars, accompanied by the distinct, puckered tissue left behind by high-velocity shrapnel impacts. A long, neat line traced along the left side of his ribcage, disappearing beneath the waistband of his work pants. His skin bore the weathered, sun-baked tone of someone who had spent years exposed to harsh, unforgiving elements under heavy loads.

The nervous chuckles among the students instantly vanished. The quiet hum of the room collapsed into a vacuum of stunned silence.

Daniel stepped barefoot onto the mat.
