Chapter 15 - LOCATION OFF

Six months later, Ryan moved again.

Not because anyone had forced him.

That distinction mattered.

The new apartment was across town, on the fourth floor of a converted brick warehouse overlooking the river.

Only four people had the address.

His employer.

His landlord.

His closest friend.

And eventually, Sarah.

Linda did not.

Evan did not.

Not yet.

Evan obeyed the protective order.

A letter arrived once through his attorney.

Ryan was legally free to accept it.

He left it unopened in a drawer.

Maybe someday.

Maybe never.

That was the point.

Linda began seeing a counselor.

Ryan knew only because Sarah mentioned it after asking whether he wanted to hear an update.

Ryan said yes.

Linda had sold the old house.

Thrown away most of the files.

She had also sent Ryan a single letter through his attorney.

Unlike Evan's, he opened hers.

It contained no excuses.

No warnings.

No reminders that she was his mother.

Only five sentences.

I spent years believing fear made my choices right.

It didn't.

You asked me to stop, and I didn't stop.

I am sorry.

If you ever want me in your life again, I will wait for you to decide what that looks like.

Ryan read it several times.

Then put it away.

Three months later, he invited Linda to meet him for coffee.

Public place.

One hour.

No home address.

No location sharing.

Linda arrived ten minutes early but stayed in her car until the agreed time.

Ryan noticed.

When she entered, she did not hug him.

“Can I?”

Ryan hesitated.

Then nodded.

The hug was short.

That mattered too.

They talked about ordinary things.

Work.

A movie Linda had seen.

The terrible coffee.

Neither mentioned Evan.

Neither mentioned 2009.

Not because the past had disappeared.

Because for once, Linda allowed Ryan to decide when it entered the room.

When they left, Linda paused on the sidewalk.

“I'll let you contact me.”

Ryan nodded.

“Okay.”

She smiled faintly.

Then walked away.

No question about where he was going.

No request to text when he arrived.

No demand to know who he was meeting later.

Ryan stood there until she disappeared around the corner.

His phone vibrated.

For a fraction of a second, old anxiety returned.

He looked.

It was a system notification.

Find My.

Location Sharing Options.

Ryan opened it.

Years ago, Linda had taught him that knowing where someone was meant you loved them.

Evan had believed finding Ryan meant he had the right to keep him.

Sarah had believed knowing the truth meant she had the right to force him toward it.

Every person in his family had confused access with connection.

Ryan finally understood the difference.

He looked at the screen.

Location Sharing: OFF.

He smiled.

Not because nobody knew where he was.

Because now, if anyone did—

it would be because he chose to tell them.

Ryan locked the phone and slipped it into his pocket.

Then he walked into the city alone.

Nobody following.

Nobody waiting outside his door.

Nobody watching a little blue dot move across a screen.

May you like

For the first time in his life, disappearing from someone else's map did not feel like being lost.

It felt like being free.
