Chapter 12 - NO CONTACT

Ryan changed everything.

New phone number.

New email for important accounts.

New building access code.

He informed management that nobody, including relatives, was to receive information about him.

Detective Hale collected copies of the messages, camera footage and trackers.

Evan admitted placing the AirTag.

Sarah admitted sending the anonymous notes.

Linda admitted placing the second tracker in Ryan's backpack.

Three people.

Three explanations.

Every one of them began with some variation of:

I was trying to help.

Ryan stopped accepting explanations.

He sent all three the same message.

DO NOT FOLLOW ME.

DO NOT TRACK ME.

DO NOT COME TO MY HOME OR WORK.

DO NOT CONTACT PEOPLE AROUND ME FOR INFORMATION.

IF I WANT CONTACT, I WILL INITIATE IT.

Sarah replied first.

I understand. I'm sorry.

Then nothing else.

For the first time, someone obeyed.

Evan waited two days.

Then an email arrived.

I know you're angry, but seventeen years is a long time to lose.

Ryan did not reply.

The next morning, another appeared.

Please don't let your mother's mistakes take more time from us.

Ryan forwarded both to Detective Hale.

Then blocked the address.

Linda lasted five days.

Ryan was leaving work when he found her standing beside his car.

He stopped twenty feet away.

Linda looked exhausted.

“I just want five minutes.”

“No.”

“You won't answer anything.”

“I told you not to contact me.”

“You can't cut your mother off with a text.”

Ryan took out his phone.

Linda stared at him.

“Are you calling the police?”

“If you don't leave.”

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

“After everything I did for you.”

The sentence hit him harder than shouting would have.

Ryan looked at his mother.

At the woman who had worked two jobs when he was small.

Who stayed beside his hospital bed when he broke his wrist.

Who packed lunches with little notes.

Who taught him to drive.

Who also lied about his father.

Tracked him.

Investigated his friends.

Stood outside his apartment at one in the morning because his location had disappeared from her screen.

Love had been real.

So had control.

One did not erase the other.

“Mom.”

Linda wiped her eyes.

“I love you.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

Ryan shook his head.

“Because loving me doesn't give you unlimited access to me.”

Linda stood motionless.

Ryan unlocked his car.

As he opened the door, she said quietly:

“What if something happens to you?”

Ryan looked back.

“Then it happens without you knowing beforehand.”

Linda's face crumpled.

Ryan hated the answer.

But he knew she needed to hear it.

Life without control meant uncertainty.

For both of them.

He drove away.

Ten minutes later, his phone rang from an unknown number.

Ryan ignored it.

It rang again.

Then a voicemail appeared.

He nearly deleted it.

Instead, he listened.

Evan's voice.

Urgent.

“Ryan, your mother came to my house.”

Ryan's grip tightened on the steering wheel.

“She says she's going to make me disappear from your life again.”

A pause.

May you like

Then Evan said:

“I don't think she came alone.”
