Chapter 7 - The Will Reading

The next morning, Calvin arrived at Penelope’s office with Tabitha beside him and Kyle across the hall pretending he had not been coordinating with them. Calvin looked exactly like the man who had once lied to my face without blinking: expensive suit, easy smile, eyes too careful.
Tabitha avoided looking at me.
The will reading began at ten.
Penelope read the primary distribution first. The house and garden to me. Dad’s investment accounts split between me and Kyle, with Kyle’s share suspended pending executor review due to documented coercion concerns. A charitable portion to the pancreatic cancer center. Small gifts to two longtime staff members who had helped him in his final months.
Nothing to Calvin.
Nothing to Tabitha.
Calvin leaned forward. “Everett promised—”
Penelope raised one hand. “Mr. Cole, you are not a beneficiary.”

Kyle’s face reddened. “This is because Paige manipulated him.”
Penelope opened the secondary file.
“No,” she said. “This is because your father anticipated that accusation.”
Then she played Dad’s sworn video statement.
His face appeared on the screen, thinner than I remembered, eyes tired but clear. I pressed one hand to my mouth. He looked straight into the camera.
“If Calvin Cole, Tabitha Cole, or my son Kyle attempt to pressure Paige out of Everett House, destroy the rose garden, or challenge her competency, I direct my executor to treat that as evidence of the exact coercion I feared. Paige stayed. Paige cared for me. Paige asked for nothing. Anyone claiming she took advantage of me is lying.”
Kyle looked down.
Calvin’s smile disappeared.
Tabitha’s face went white.
Dad continued.
“The white roses remain with my daughter. They mark the beginning I once blessed and the ending I now protect.”

I started crying then, quietly, not from weakness.
From being defended by a man who had known more than I thought.
