Chapter 2 - The House Calvin Lost

My name is Paige Everett, and the house Tabitha wanted had been my father’s heart long before it became anyone’s inheritance. Everett House sat at the end of a quiet suburban drive, all brick, white columns, and rose beds that bloomed every May like they were trying to prove grief could still make something beautiful. Dad bought it when I was nine and spent the next twenty years improving it with his own hands. He repaired walls, planted trees, built the garden paths, and kept a notebook full of pruning schedules, roof estimates, paint colors, and small reminders that only made sense to him.

He planted the first white rose bush on the day I married Calvin Cole.

“White means beginnings,” he told me, pressing dirt around the roots with both hands.

Fifteen years later, those same roses watched me come home after the divorce, carrying two suitcases, a cracked heart, and the kind of silence that follows betrayal when everyone else already knew before you did.

Calvin had left me for his assistant, Tabitha. She was polished, blonde, ambitious, and gifted at smiling while taking something that belonged to someone else. During the divorce, she stayed mostly in the background, but her fingerprints were everywhere: the sudden new bank accounts, the rewritten schedules, the emails Calvin forgot to delete, the polite messages she sent me pretending sympathy while sleeping in my bed.

Dad never forgave Calvin.

At least, that was what I believed.

Then cancer came. Pancreatic. Fast. Cruel. Eight months from diagnosis to funeral. In those final months, Dad grew thinner, quieter, and harder to read. My brother Kyle visited often, more than he had in years. Calvin started appearing at the country club again. Tabitha’s name drifted into conversations where it did not belong.

I asked Dad once if Calvin was bothering him.

He only squeezed my hand and said, “Roses don’t fear weeds, Paige. They just need someone patient enough to pull them.”

I thought he was comforting me.

Now I wondered if he had been warning me.
